Overhauling the golf course: Mesquite Golf Club getting a makeover

For many local golfers, March 4 will be a day of sadness with a hint of excitement.

The city of Mesquite is closing its golf course for approximately six months to perform some much-needed updates to the course and facilities to make the Mesquite Golf Club a more enjoyable course to play.

"When we took over in 2010, we started to perform some maintenance on the course; we got the course in the best shape we could. We soon realized that we could not meet the expectations of golfers in terms of ball speed on the greens. Once we realized we could not achieve this we began looking at making changes to the course as well as other areas," said Cliff Keheley, Mesquite parks and recreation director.

Keheley said the course has never had any major renovations since it was created in 1964.

"There have been some minor upgrades, but other than two or three holes the course is pretty much the same as when it was built," Keheley said. "At some point all golf courses of this age have had to replace the turf on the greens."

The renovation will include a complete replacement of all greens and tee boxes, several modifications to hole locations, changes to tee box alignments and a re-routing of several holes on the course. The city will also add bunkers throughout the course and create several wetland areas.

"By expanding the length of some holes and adding bunkers we can make the course more challenging for the more experienced players," Keheley said.

The city is not only enhancing the course for the experienced golfers. The entire concept of the renovation centers on improving the overall golf experience for all skill levels.

"We really are looking at the total golf experience for all golfers," Keheley said. "Instead of having three tee boxes we will now have five. This will allow inexperienced golfers to come play the course and have an enjoyable time. We are really focused on bringing new golfers in."

The course will also begin offering regular group lessons throughout the year with an emphasis being placed on golfers from 6 to 18 years old.

In addition to the golf course improvements, the city will renovate the pro shop and snack bar facility at the course. The renovation to the snack bar will include the construction of new restrooms and an expansion of the restaurant seating area.

"Our focus on the interior is on promoting better customer service," Keheley said. "We will be introducing more self-serve options at the snack bar to allow for quicker service. We don't want people having to wait in line at the snack bar when they would rather be on the course playing."

The pro shop will be updated with new displays and additional storage areas that will allow for the display of more merchandise. A new point-of-sale system will be put in place that will have an online reservation component.

"The pro shop will be able to stock and display a lot more inventory. The new point-of-sale system will help us reduce wait times at the pro shop by having two cash registers open during peak times and will also allow golfers to book tee times from their computer or mobile phone," Keheley said.

Keheley said the renovation work is scheduled to be completed in mid-September. There is no firm date because the reopening of the course is dependent on the new turf's growth rate.
