Ward Floyd Williams
Ward Floyd Williams, 92, passed away on February 10, 2013, at Atrium Medical Center in Corinth, Texas, after a two-week, hard-fought battle with pneumonia.
Before residing at Pilot Point Care Center in Pilot Point, Texas, for 18 days prior to his death, he lived in Denton, Texas.

Ward was born on November 24, 1920, in Mullin, Texas, to Alonzo Arillious "Lon" Williams and Matilda Elizabeth "Lizzie" Kelso Williams. He was a descendant of John Williams, founder of Williams Ranch Settlement (established around 1855), 640-acre section of land between Mullin and Goldthwaite in Mills County, Texas. The Williams clan's establishment was a thriving community during the Civil War as a result of cattle trade with Mexico, a major stage stop between Austin and Brownwood, and an important roundup point on the western cattle trail.

Ward graduated from Mullin High School in 1940 and entered active military service in 1942. In addition to serving time in Australia and Okinawa, he fought in the Battle of Luzon; his decorations and citations include the American Theater Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon, Philippine Liberation Ribbon, and Victory Ribbon.

Upon returning to civilian life, Ward worked for Texas Power and Light Company, retiring after 44 years as a lineman inspector. He married Gwendolyn Marie "Gwen" Hendricks on October 15, 1949, who preceded him in death on January 23, 2006. They were longtime residents of Anna, Texas, where they raised their family just down the road from Gwen's parents, Lorenzo Dow "Dow" Hendricks and Mary Alma Powell Hendricks.

In addition to his parents, father-in-law, mother-in-law, and wife, Ward was preceded in death by his sisters Mildred Wilkins and Ollene Blackburn, as well as his brothers Leonard Williams and Victor Williams.

He is survived by his son Steve Williams and wife, Terrie of Allen, Texas; daughter Melinda McBee and husband, Jake, of Denton, Texas; granddaughter Ashby Williams of McKinney, Texas; niece June Seamans of Brownwood, Texas; niece Nelda Lehrmann of Boyd, Texas; niece Wanda Allen of Goldthwaite, Texas; niece Carolyn Knight of Goldthwaite, Texas; nephew David Blackburn of Round Rock, Texas; and nephew Gene Williams of Temple, Texas.

Ward was particularly close to his wife's family, and he is survived by sister-in-law Frances Lawrence of McKinney, Texas; sister-in-law Mary Dow Wright and husband, Harry, of Port Neches, Texas; brother-in-law Don Hendricks and wife, Charlotte, of Celina, Texas; aunt-in-law Bonnie Trice and husband, Bill, of Fort Worth, Texas; and the wife of his uncle-in-law, Glenna Hendricks of McKinney, Texas.

Ward was a fervently independent person with a reserved but heartfelt disposition. He had a great love for reading, nature, animals, children and family. He will best be remembered for his quiet wisdom, dry wit, sarcastic humor, patience, generosity, and fun-loving nature.

A memorial service will take place at Mulkey-Mason Funeral Home, 705 N. Locust, Denton, Texas, on Saturday, March 2, at 10:00 a.m.; Ward's ashes will be interred at Highland Cemetery in Melissa, Texas, at a later date.

Those wishing to make donations in Ward's memory may do so to the Denton Animal Shelter Foundation, P.O. Box 486, Denton, Texas 76202. Online condolences can be made at www.mulkeymasondenton.com, and the family can be reached online at mcbee58@verizon.net.
