West's Patterson retiring
Friday's 64-63 Region II Semifinal loss to Pflugerville wasn't just the end of the season for Plano West girls basketball, it marked the end of head coach Don Patterson's career.
He told the team he was retiring Tuesday.
"There were a few tears," Patterson said. "I think it was a bit of a stunner for them, and for me, it was definitely one of the hardest things I've ever had to do."
Patterson has led West since its first season in 1999-2000 with the Lady Wolves winning the 2005-06 Class 5A State Championship.
"Everyone always said you know when you know," Patterson said. "So, in November, I looked at my wife and said 'I think I'm done.' And once I knew it was going to be my last season, I figured 'we better make it a good one.'"
West accomplished that feat by advancing to regionals for the first time since 2006-07.

Do-or-die for Sidekicks
The Dallas Sidekicks face a must-win scenario today at 7:30 p.m. from the AEC in their PASL divisional playoff series against Rio Grande Valley.
Dallas was dropped in overtime, 5-4, Sunday against the Flash in the first leg of the series.
Sidekicks midfielder Ricardinho registered a hat trick, but the Flash's Hector Vallejo converted the game winner in overtime. If Dallas ties the series, a 30-minute mini-game will be held at the end of tonight's game with the winner on to the Ron Newman Cup semifinals March 10 in San Diego.

Hansen helps Harvard win
Harvard girls track and field won the Ivy League Indoor Championships for the first time since 2000 last weekend.
And freshman Madison Hansen played a part by placing fifth in the pentathlon.
The Crimson received two points from Hansen as her fifth-place score of 3,587 was the fourth-best pentathlon mark ever recorded at Harvard.
Dolberry sets scoring mark
Palm Beach Atlantic senior Ashley Dolberry, a Plano Senior alum, became her college's all-time leading scoring last week.
Dolberry's career mark of 1,132 points surpassed that of Jo Jo Vital-Herne (Class of 2002).
Dolberry set the record with 23 points on the road versus Barry University. The accolades don't stop there for Dolberry though as she was recently named to the Capital One Division II Academic All-America second team. Dolberry, who will attend dentistry school after graduation, holds a 3.96 GPA to go along with her team-best 15.3 points and 9.6 rebounds per game.

Shred-A-Thon at Plano
Following last year's successful campaign, the Plano Senior wrestling team is holding its second Shred-A-Thon.
The even is noon-2 p.m. March 23 at Plano.
Those interested can bring boxes of paper to be destroyed via mobile shredding trucks. The cost is $10 for the first box and $5 for each additional box with the wrestlers coming to the car and taking the boys to the shredder.
This year will also feature an e-waste recycling program for computers, printers, phones, etc. The suggested donation for that is $5 per device under 10 pounds, $10 per device under 25 pounds and $15 per device under 50 pounds.

Planoite among Fan Cave finalists
Plano West alum Mina Park is among the 52 finalists for the MLB Fan Cave 2013 competition.
Park is representing the Texas Rangers, with a chance at moving to New York to watch every baseball game of the upcoming season while blogging, interviewing players and making creative videos. The competition's top 30 finalists are selected through fan voting, the original audition submission and ability to generate media buzz. Each finalist will be flown out to spring training in Arizona later this month.

Groselle a Senior CLASS finalist
The Citadel senior Mike Groselle is a finalist for the Senior Class Award in men's basketball.
Groselle is a Plano West alum.
The award combines community, classroom, character and competition in its voting process.
Groselle excels in those categories.
The center is already 13th on The Citadel's all-time points list (1,238), third in total rebounds (686) and eighth in field goals made (501). Groselle has the highest field goal percentage in the 102-year history of the program and is the all-time leader in career double-doubles (25) and single season double-doubles (14 in 2011-12).
Groselle has done well off the court too.
The civil engineering major has a 3.693 GPA and holds the rank of captain on the team, which gives him captain rank in the Corps of Cadets.
Fan voting, which accounts for one-third of the final tally, is open at: seniorclassaward.com.
Anderson picks up offers to Navy, Rice
The recruiting of Plano West junior running back Auston Anderson continues to heat up.
Anderson received his first official offer Feb. 6, Signing Day for the Class of 2013, when Northwestern came calling. Add Rice and Navy to that list with the former offering Feb. 15 and the latter Monday afternoon.
The interest in Anderson makes sense.
The 5-foot-8, 175-pounder was a first team all-district and all-Collin County selection after rushing for 1,156 yards and 13 touchdowns.
West already has one Class of 2014 commit as linebacker Lance Cottrell is pledged to SMU.
