Girls basketball: Taking care of business: The Colony returning to playoffs

The Colony's girls basketball team spoiled Frisco ISD's hopes of securing all four playoff spots from District 9-4A Friday when the Lady Cougars knocked off Frisco Wakeland in a play-in game, 52-44.
With the win, The Colony qualified for the postseason for a fifth consecutive season and squared off Tuesday against Newman Smith in the bi-district round (results not available as of press time).
The Colony had previously defeated Wakeland Jan. 29 to split the season series.
"We had a great week," said Jason Weese, The Colony head coach. "The girls were focused on what they needed to do and knew the task they were facing. We had a great game against Little Elm, came back and refocused and then took care of Wakeland. Those are both good ball clubs we beat."
Weese added they talked a lot throughout the week about how to approach the pressure situations.
"We talked about being confident but staying focused and about enjoying the process yet still playing with intensity," he said.
On Friday, Terra Ellison scored a team-high 17 points, while Taylor Holley and Libby Waddell chipped in 15 points apiece and Kylie Covington contributed five.
The Lady Cougars limited Alana Aguirre to 18 points and gained control early with a 16-4 advantage in the first quarter.
"We came out and shot the ball extremely well early," Weese said. "Taylor and Libby each hit two 3-pointers in the first quarter. When you can make four threes in a quarter like that it always helps.
"Kylie did a great job defending at the top of the zone with Libby and Shayla (Smith). And if Alana was able to get past them, then Terra is not easy to deal with, either."
Wakeland chipped away in the second and third, getting to within five entering the fourth period, but The Colony pulled away in a high-scoring final quarter where they held a 23-20 advantage.
"They were trying to shoot a little quicker," Weese said. "But every time we had some sort of answer and we were able to make a few free throws to help put it away."
Weese added Holley was a "rebounding machine" for the Lady Cougars.
"I don't know exactly how many she had, but she was great," Weese said. "That's pretty much been the case all year long."
The Lady Cougars were able to go to the bench against Little Elm, as the squad had eight players score, including 14 from Ellison and 10 from Waddell. Freshman Olivia Eubanks and Smith chipped in six points apiece.
Now The Colony can shift its focus to Newman Smith, which finished first in District 10-4A (13-1).
"I haven't seen a lot of them," Weese said. "But I know they were in a tough district with West Mesquite and Highland Park and only lost once. So they're a pretty solid club. We're going to have to take care of the ball, do a good job of getting back in our transition defense and make them shoot from the perimeter."
Swimming: Cougars compete at regionals
The Colony's swimming and diving teams were in action Saturday competing at the UIL Class 4A Region III Championships in Frisco.
The Colony (124) placed fifth on the boys side, where Frisco Wakeland (428) earned first, with Creekview (80) in 11th and Newman Smith in 12th (60).
The Lady Cougars (52) finished 14th behind first-place Highland Park (441) with Smith in 10th (76) and Creekview in 21st (12).
Individually, the Cougars top performers included Billy Lawson, who took third in the 100-yard butterfly (54.55) and fifth in the 100 backstroke (56.41), while Joseph Yi placed eighth in the 200 individual medley (2:09.50).
Boys and girls soccer: Lady Cougars fall in opener
The Colony's boys and girls soccer team kicked off their respective District 20-4A campaigns Tuesday with matches against Newman Smith (results not available as of press time).
The Lady Cougars were coming off a 2-0 loss against Wichita Falls Rider Feb. 5, while the boys team lost Friday against McKinney North, 6-1.
Jose Larin found the back of the net for The Colony, but the Cougars couldn't slow North's Kyle Biggio, who scored four times.
Both squads continue in district at 7:30 p.m. Friday against Highland Park with the boys at home and the girls taking on the reigning state champs on the road.
