“To Kill a Mockingbird” fans will flock to the Allen Public Library next week for a visit with Mary Badham, the actress who played Scout in the classic film.
Badham will make a virtual appearance at 7 p.m. on Tuesday and tell stories of her time on the set with stars Gregory Peck and Robert Duvall. She will also take questions from audience members, and her appearance will be followed by a screening of the film, which celebrated its 50th anniversary last year.
“She'll recall stories of being on the set with these great Hollywood giants,” said Tom Keener, cultural arts manager at the Allen Public Library, who saw the movie at the Circle Theater in Dallas when it was released.
“She stole the show as far as I'm concerned,” Keener said.
Unravel the Book of Kells
The library is also hosting a discussion of the The Book of Kells, a historic illustrated manuscript of the four Biblical Gospels created by Celtic monks. Austin College professors Jerry Lincecum and Peggy Redshaw will talk about the history of the manuscript and its creators.
“The Book of Kells was copied by hand and illuminated by monks around the year 800 A.D. Although it was probably begun on the island of Iona, between Scotland and Ireland, its name is derived from the Abbey of Kells, in the Irish Midlands, where it was kept from at least the 9th century to 1541,” Lincecum said in a release about the event.
This event will take place today at 7:30 p.m. at the library.
Meet author Gary Schmidt
Gary Schmidt, the author of this year's ALLen reads book “Okay for Now,” will make an appearance at the library at 2 p.m. on Saturday. Schmidt is also the author “The Wednesday Wars,” which won a Newbery Honor medal in 2008.
All of these events are free to the public. For more information, call 214-509-4911.
