Preston Road closed Thursday night in Prosper

Published: Wednesday, March 6, 2013 1:51 PM CST
Celina residents heading home Thursday night on Preston Road may need to seek an alternate route.

The first phase of the Preston Road expansion from a two-lane road to a six-lane thoroughfare is set to be completed later this week, and construction crews will have the road closed from 8 p.m. Thursday to 6 a.m. Friday in order to switch traffic from the northbound lanes to the newly reconstructed southbound lanes.

Celso Martinez, spokesman for the city of Prosper, said the construction will be key to future growth in Prosper as well as Celina.

"It was a blacktop two-lane road, and if you have been in the area for any length of time you may remember that 121 was the same way," he said. "Everything grew around it, but it stayed the same until TxDOT came in and expanded it. The need has been here for a while and the new road will give us more elbow room to grow."

Martinez said the lack of turn lanes along Preston in Prosper led to a number of traffic accidents. The accident rate should be reduced once the final phase of the construction is completed in about a year, Martinez said. The construction involves digging up and moving utility lines, which has increased the time it has taken to complete the project.

Motorists may use either the Dallas North Tollway or Coit Road as an alternate route, Martinez said, adding that police officers will be on scene to direct at Prosper Trail and 1st Street during the time Preston Road is closed. He said once the road reopens Friday morning, all traffic will use the southbound lanes until the reconstruction and widening of the northbound lanes is completed in early 2014.

"When this project is complete Preston Road through Prosper and Celina is going to be a major thoroughfare just like it is south of U.S. 380," Martinez said. "This closure is one of these unavoidable inconveniences, but Friday morning we are going to be fat and happy."
