Published: Thursday, February 14, 2013 5:24 PM CST
Dr. Chad W. Airhart of Mesquite was promoted from assistant professor of art without tenure to associate professor of art with tenure at Carson-Newman University in Jefferson City, Tenn.

Airhart joined the Carson-Newman Faculty in 2008.

He is C-N's only full-time professor of art history and therefore teaches the vast majority of the classes in art history and art appreciation. He serves as the art department representative on the Teacher Education Council and is the academic advisor for all of the University's art majors with an emphasis in teaching.

Airhart was the first recipient of Carson-Newman's Mossy Creek Teacher Scholar Award in 2011 and is now a member of the Faculty Enhancement Committee.

He is a practicing artist and his scholarship includes writing, publishing, and presenting formal papers while simultaneously continuing a series of oil paintings and drawings for exhibition in Tennessee and Texas.

Papers include "Rivalries in the South: Art, Culture, and Competition in the World's Fairs of Prominent Southern Cities in the Late Nineteenth-Early Twentieth Century,"and "Rivalry in the Arts: The Inaugural International Conference in Paragone Studies, Flint, MI."

His publications include "Diversity, Dichotomy, and the Climb Toward Cultural Identity: A Look at Knoxville Art from 1878-1926," and "Tours of the Charleston Renaissance: A Comparison of Local vs. Visiting Artists and the Depiction of Landscapes and City Views."

Airhart is a member of the Knoxville Museum of Art and his personal artwork is represented by The District Gallery in Knoxville, Tenn.

Airhart attends First United Methodist Church of Jefferson City, Tenn., and has delivered a series of lectures about Christianity in the history of art at his church.

Carson-Newman, a Christian university, has been recognized as a leading liberal arts institution by U.S. News, Forbes.com and The Princeton Review. For information, see www.cn.edu.
