Published: Thursday, March 7, 2013 9:37 PM CST
The Mesquite Fire Department presented its annual meritorious awards during the regular council meeting on Monday, March 4. Among the top awards were Fire Officer of the Year, Paramedic of the Year, Firefighter of the Year and several lifesaving awards.

"This year we are honoring 23 individuals for their professional and courageous service," said Mark Kerby, fire chief.

Captain David Shedd was named Fire Officer of the Year. Shedd has been with the department since 1984.

"David is known as the type of leader that builds team spirit and camaraderie among his people," said Larry Spurgin, assistant fire chief. "It's easy to tell what his peers think of him since this is the third time he has been chosen as officer of the year."

Brian Lester was honored as Paramedic of the Year. Lester has been with the department since 2003.

"[He] is a conscientious and professional paramedic that helps our customers in any way possible," Spurgin said.

The award for firefighter of the year was presented to Patrick Wilson. Wilson has been with the department for 27 years.

"He has served on the apparatus committee for four years and has helped to improve our apparatuses," Spurgin said.

In addition, there were several lifesaving awards handed out as part of the ceremony. The first award was given to a group of firefighters and paramedics who were dispatched to a nursing center. The crew arrived and found a man unresponsive.

"Upon transportation to the hospital, the man regained consciousness and was able to sign his own patient treatment form," Spurgin said.

The recipients of the award were Jon Moore, Vance Lay, Tommy Green, Travis Block and Dan Turner.

The second lifesaving award was presented to a crew who treated a patient who coded en route to the hospital. They performed CPR and she recovered. A letter was sent to the department thanking the crew for saving her life.

The award was presented to Billy Massey, Mike Bartis, Mike Potter, Jeff Dillon and Jason Powell.

The next award was presented to a crew who performed a defibrillation on an unconscious woman and got her to the hospital for future care. The award was given to Billy Massey, David Ivie, Jeff Dillon, Jason Powell and Mike Potter.

Another lifesaving award was presented to a crew who found an unconscious man sitting upright in a chair. They began CPR and he regained a pulse and lost it twice during transfer. The recipients were Harlan Lowrance, Donald Childress, Jimmy Reimer, Bobby Bryant and Jesse Kingery.

The fifth lifesaving award was presented to a crew who treated an elderly man and continued to perform lifesaving intervention en route to the hospital. The man survived as a result of their action. The award recipients were Mark Lacey, Marvin Hughes, Jesse Kingery, Robert Milby and Brian Lester.

The final award presented was to a group who treated a 29-year-old female in cardiac arrest. After defibrillation the patient regained a pulse. The award was presented to David Shedd, Kenneth Crawford, Bobby Bryant, Jonathan Herb, Matthew Taylor and Ronald Buie.
