WEB EXCLUSIVE: Remember the Alamo: Golden Grip wins medals in San Antonio

Published: Wednesday, February 20, 2013 1:58 PM CST
Traveling far from its base in Collin County, Golden Grip Gymnastics found a welcome home in San Antonio as the Optional team rounded up a cavalcade of medals at the Alamo Classic (Feb. 1-3) in San Antonio.

"The girls are training hard and it is really starting to show," said Marina Tatarchina, Golden Grip owner and head coach. "Their scores continue to rise and they are in perfect position to be real contenders at the state and regional levels."

Leading the charge in San Antonio was Arianna Patterson.

The Plano resident, competing in the Junior B division, won an all-around gold medal after first-place finishes on the vault (9.775), floor exercise (9.475) and a second on the uneven bars (9.6). Patterson also received a judge's commendation for excellent height on her vaults.

Patterson's success was part of a particularly strong run for the Level 8 gymnasts.

Competing in the Junior A division, Allen resident Layher Braley was top 10 on the vault, bars and floor. At the Junior B level, Megan Fitzgerald's strongest event was the vault, where she came in third (9.1), but she also put up top-10 finishes on the bars, beam and floor to finish fourth in the all-around.

Competing in the Senior B division, Emily Scott finished third in the all-around with top-six placings on the vault, beam and floor. Scott's best apparatus was the bars, where she finished second (9.05).

The Level 7 and Level 10 teams had individual standouts as well.

In the former grouping, Lucas resident Starr Hague participated in the Junior B division and put up top-10 finishes on the beam and vault. Hague also received a judge's award for her press to handstand skill on the beam.

Natalie Alkire, competing at Level 10, also displayed her all-around skills with top-six placings for vault (9.175), bars (8.7) and floor (8.4). Though her highest score came on the vault, Alkire's best finish was on the bars as she places second and qualified for the event finals.

The Golden Grip Optional team continued its tough schedule over the weekend by participating in the WOGA Classic in Frisco.
