WEB EXCLUSIVE: Rev-el Yell: Texas Revolution break triple digits in 103-22 preseason win

Published: Saturday, February 23, 2013 12:08 AM CST
ALLEN -- It took all of 17 seconds for the Texas Revolution to establish it was going to be a long night for the North Texas Crunch.

That was how long it took for the Revolution to find the end zone in Thursday's preseason scrap from the AEC and there would be plenty more to come in Texas' 103-22 bloodletting of the Crunch.

"We came into this game to work on certain things to get us ready for the regular season," said Billy Back, Texas head coach. "Every team in the IFL has a lot of talent, so tonight was about execution and domination. We did both of those."

The Revolution scored touchdowns on their first nine possessions Thursday -- all of which transpired in the first half. A 36-yard kickoff return from running back Vondrell McGee got the ball rolling, with rusher Mon Williams eluding one defender and coasting into the end zone on his first carry for a 7-0 Texas lead with 14:43 left in the first.

That was a familiar theme as six of Texas' first nine touchdowns were scored on drives of two plays or less. Quarterback Marcus Jackson had a hand in five of those, including passing scores to four different receivers.

A 14-yard touchdown throw from Jackson to Phillip Barnett extended Texas' lead to 14-0 less than four minutes into the game with additional receiving touchdowns procured by Nate Jones (6 yards), Justin Siller (5) and Jeremy Brown (4) in the first half. Jackson, who slung 218 yards on 21-of-26 attempts and five touchdowns, added a 2-yard touchdown run to cap a 35-8 first quarter.

Williams followed with a 5-yard touchdown run, while McGee scored on runs of 16 and 3 yards as the Revolution ballooned their lead to 63-8 by halftime.

"I think our running backs are the strong points of our team," Back said. "[Williams and McGee] are dynamic and we're trying to get the ball in their hands as many times as we can."

Not much resistance was offered up by North Texas.

The Crunch, members of the American Professional Football League, managed just two first downs and turned the ball over five times in the first half. Four of those takeaways came on interceptions, with defensive backs Frankie Solomon Jr. and Scooter Rogers each bagging a pair. Solomon wasn't finished, recovering a fumble and adding two more picks en route to being named the game's MVP.

"I still have a lot of stuff to work on as far as individual and team work goes," Solomon said. "Overall, we did pretty good, but we still gave up too many points and we lagged at times offensively."

The most the Crunch had going for them was the unique means by which they manufactured points.

Trailing 14-0, North Texas had a field goal attempt by Chad Marrow blocked from 22 yards out -- only to have receiver Stacy Martin come up from the ensuing scrum with the ball in the end zone for a Crunch touchdown. Two more points were tacked on with 47 seconds remaining in the first after a line-drive kickoff from Texas' Brett Peddicord belted a Crunch player in the face. The ball rolled into the end zone and was recovered by Peddicord for a safety.

That did little to disrupt the Revolution's blitzkrieg, with a crack at the 100-point plateau looming as the game wore on.

Three touchdown passes in the fourth by backup quarterback Kewan Dewberry pulled the Revolution within striking distance at 96-22 and, with 12 seconds left in regulation, Texas broke the century mark after the signal caller heaved a 37-yard score to Barnett for the 103-22 final.

"Every game the goal is 100-0," Back said. "That means you're executing on every cylinder and every possession, and we stumbled a few times today."

Dewberry threw for 127 yards and four touchdowns on 8-of-11 passing. Jones led all receivers with 111 yards and three touchdowns on seven catches, while Barnett caught six balls for 105 yards and two scores. On the ground, Williams scampered for 61 yards and two touchdowns while McGee added 50 total yards and three touchdowns.

The Revolution officially begin their 2013 IFL campaign at 7:05 p.m. Friday on the road against the Cedar Rapids Titans. Texas won't return home until March 22 against the Tri-Cities Fever.

"We've got some stuff to build off of," Back said. "There were a couple wrong reads, but we're going to build on that and attack the IFL season."
