Girls basketball: Lady Jags split close contests

Published: Friday, November 30, 2012 6:04 PM CST
With an up-tempo system that already lends itself to a frenetic pace, Thanksgiving break didn't help Flower Mound's girls basketball team get in an offensive groove.

Still, the Lady Jaguars (11-2) managed to earn a split in their two non-district games last week, coming out on top Tuesday against Newman Smith, 42-40, but falling Nov. 20 against Frisco Liberty, 54-51.

"We had a lot of turnovers against Smith," said Sherika Nelson, Flower Mound head coach. "We took a few days off for Thanksgiving and I think it showed. It was tough for us to get in rhythm and we didn't do a very good job on defense, either. But we managed to have a four-point lead with about a minute left and we were able to pull the ball out and stall on offense and get the stops we needed on defense."

In order to overcome the 20 turnovers, Flower Mound needed strong offensive performances from Ashley Deary and Lauren Cox, who had 12 points apiece. Jessie Larson also chipped in six.

"Lauren is starting to get it going offensively," Nelson said. "It takes a little time to get into the basketball mentality and get comfortable with the speed of the game, but she is starting to get it going.

"Newman Smith has a good team that is athletic and can push the ball."

Turnovers were an issue in the loss against Liberty, as well.

"It was a back-and-forth game," Nelson said. "But they had the ball last and were able to knock down a 3-pointer from the corner with about four seconds left for the win."

Nelson added the Lady Jaguars had a tough time slowing Liberty post Bria Frierson, who recorded a game-high 20 points.

Flower Mound continued in non-district schedule Friday against Lovejoy (results not available as of press time).

"Lovejoy is a solid club and has a very athletic player who can score," Nelson said. "We've been working on our defense all week. And we have to do a better job of taking care of the ball. I know our style is going to lead to more turnovers but I'm hoping we get used to that by district. I know the kids were ready for the break and everything, but excuses aren't going to get us any better."
