Girls soccer: Goals an issue of late for Lady Hawks

Published: Tuesday, March 5, 2013 5:24 PM CST
Facing the top two teams in the district, Hebron's girls soccer team had an opportunity to make a statement, but instead were able to earn points in just 1-of-2 matches.

Goals were at a premium for the Lady Hawks as they fell Feb. 26 against first-place Marcus, 2-0, before playing Coppell to a scoreless draw Friday.

"We squandered our chances against Coppell," said Eric Ramirez, Hebron head coach. "I thought it could have been a 3-0 match, because we created a lot of opportunities, we just couldn't put one in. It was nice to get a point, but we really needed to get a win to have a chance to catch [Coppell]."

Defensively, however, the Lady Hawks have been performing well.

"Our new formation has helped," Ramirez said. "Our midfielders have been strong and our defenders have been doing a good job and are holding up in the back."

Against Marcus, the squads were scoreless at the break before the Lady Marauders broke through 23 seconds into the second half.

"Their second goal was kind of fluky," Ramirez said. "We had them on their heels a couple times but couldn't convert. We have quality players at forward, they're just missing their mark right now. It just feels like there is a lid on the goal."

Still, Hebron is just five points out of first.

"We're playing alright," Ramirez said. "We're right there, but we need to start getting wins and not just points so we can avoid finishing fourth."

Boys soccer: Cowboys pull away from Hawks

Twice Hebron's boys soccer team held a one-goal advantage Friday over first-place Coppell but were unable to maintain the margin, falling victim to the Cowboys following an offensive onslaught in the second half.

The Hawks - ranked No. 16 in the nation by the Elite Soccer Report - ultimately fell to Coppell, 9-2, on the heels of a 2-0 loss Feb. 26 against Marcus.

Hebron led, 1-0, and later, 2-1, before Coppell (No. 6) rattled off eight consecutive goals.

On Feb. 26, the Cowboys were blanked by Marcus (No. 10), 2-0.
