Softball: Opening statement: Lewisville pounds Flower Mound, 12-5

LEWISVILLE — Throughout non-district competition, there was a buzz growing amongst area coaches about Lewisville’s softball team.
Tuesday in their District 5-5A opener against Flower Mound, they showed why.
The Lady Farmers couldn’t have kicked off district in better fashion, scoring seven times in the top of the first inning en route to a 12-5 victory over the Lady Jaguars.
“We jumped out on them early and that was the key,” said Lori Alexander, Lewisville head coach. “We knew they were going to score some runs late because they’re too good of a hitting team. So starting well early was our game plan of course. I don’t know … this just feels great.”
After leadoff hitter Selena Garcia reached on an error to open the bottom of the first inning — a sign of things to come for Flower Mound — and a subsequent fielder’s choice, the Lady Farmers had eight consecutive batters reach base. A one-out double by starting pitcher Maribeth Gorsuch plated Gaby Vasquez for the first run, before Miranda Worthington laced an RBI-single, Emily Lasky singled, Kacie Saucedo reached on an error, Becca Scott singled home a pair and Jessica Stahl drove in a run. Batting for the second time in the frame, Garcia put the finishing touches on the outburst with a run-scoring hit.
The Lady Farmers didn’t let up from there, tacking on three runs in the second inning while nearly batting around again, including RBI doubles from Jessica Stahl and Jessica Nelson, to push the margin to 10-0.
Lewisville — who had at least one hit or run from every player in the lineup — also tacked on runs in the third and sixth innings.
“We were able to stay focused in the middle of the ball game and that’s crucial especially against a team like Flower Mound,” Alexander said.
The Lady Jaguars, meanwhile, were productive at the plate early off Gorsuch, receiving one-hop doubles off the left field wall in each of the first three innings from Allison Smith, Ashley Fultz and Christy Lisenby, respectively. But each time, Gorsuch was able to evade damage and keep the Lady Jaguars off the scoreboard.
The freshman picked up the win, recording four strikeouts.
“I was pleased with how we hit the ball,” said Mark Larriba, Flower Mound head coach. “We hit it really well. This place is big and held a lot of balls in, but I really liked how we hit.”
The Lady Jaguars didn’t break through until the top of the fourth inning when Sydney Springfield delivered a pinch-hit two-run homer to left.
“[Flower Mound] was having to go get those balls,” Alexander said. “With [Gorsuch’s power, if they get a hold of it, that’s going to happen some. But that’s why I said earlier if our bats are going and we can get her a few runs, we can win games. They aren’t going to hit that many out on her and she did a great job to open district for us.”
Flower Mound also posted three runs in the top of the sixth as Fultz, Springfield and Lisenby each had hits.
But the Lady Jaguars couldn’t overcome their mistakes in the field, which Lewisville turned into runs on every occasion. The Lady Jaguars finished with eight errors against eight hits, while Lewisville made three errors and had 10 hits.
“We have to throw this away,” Larriba said. “We knew Lewisville was a good team and was confident. And it was probably a long time building up. Credit to them. They put the ball in play, hit it well and took advantage of all of our mistakes.”
Scott finished 2-for-4 with a game-high three RBIs, while Worthington had two hits and drove in two and Nelson and Garcia had two hits and one batted in apiece.
The Lady Farmers continue at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Marcus. The Lady Marauders are currently ranked first in the state and defeated Denton Ryan Tuesday in their opener, 4-0.
“It’s another big one,” Alexander said. “We’re getting two big ones out of the way early and if we win, it couldn’t be a better start. But you can’t count your chickens early. We know how tough Marcus is going to be.”
Flower Mound will look to bounce back at 7:30 p.m. Friday when it hosts Coppell.
“We have to practice hard and work on defense,” Larriba said. “I think some of it was mental preparation and being alert in different situations. That’s what we’re going to work on. Hitting, we’re doing alright, but we have to cut down the errors and make the plays.”
