Plano mayor to chair 2013 North Texas Gay Pride Party
By Matthew Bado
Organizers of North Texas Pride gathered with Plano Mayor Phil Dyer, local businesses and community supporters to announce plans for the Third Annual “Come as You Are” community celebration, slated for June 1 in Plano.
The launch party was hosted at the home of longtime Plano resident and businessman, Jay Forte. Dyer is the event’s honorary chairperson.
“I’m honored to be a part of this year’s pride event, and it has been a privilege getting to know you,” said Dyer. “It is great to be a part of history.”
On June 1, the family-friendly festival and vendor fair kicks off on grounds of the American Legion in Plano from 2 to 6 p.m. A dance party and celebration follows at Urban Rio’s Rooftop Event Spot in downtown Plano, featuring DJ Fierce, door prizes, party favors and the signature North Texas PRIDE 2013 T-shirt.
The festival is free of charge. Tickets to the evening celebration go on sale on April 2. Proceeds benefit C.U.R.E., a local nonprofit that brings awareness and education about HIV/AIDS in North Texas.
“I was overjoyed to see the support and encouragement come from the Mayor of Plano, businesses and individuals who believe in our mission of advancing unity and community integration,” said Co-Chair J.J. McCormick. “Plano, and the North Texas community as a whole, has come so far.”
Plano mayoral candidates Henry LaRosiliere and Fred Moses were invited to the launch event. LaRosiliere was in attendance.
