Quick start: Lady Bobcats begin district with dominant win

Published: Wednesday, March 20, 2013 4:27 PM CDT
For the Celina softball team, a tough non-district schedule might prove beneficial against District 10-3A counterparts this season.

The Lady Bobcats began district Tuesday night with a 10-2 rout of Carrollton Ranchview after sticking near the .500 mark against a difficult slate of non-district teams.

“It’s always good when you get a win in district,” said Billy Coleman, Celina head coach.

Senior starting pitcher Shayne Moore earned the win on the hill after tossing a complete game that featured nine strikeouts, while surrendering only two hits and one walk.

“[Moore] pitched well,” Coleman said. “She started out a little slow but settled down after that first inning.”

Moore was backed by solid offensive performances from senior catcher Miranda West and junior outfielder Sarah Cantu. The two players combined for five of Celina’s 13 hits in the game.

“[Cantu] has been a big help to the team this year,” Coleman said.

West and Moore are the only seniors on a junior-heavy squad that has seen eight of its starters change positions since last season.

“They all embrace doing what is best for the team,” Coleman said.

Included in that change has been West moving behind the plate to catch Moore.

“She’s use to playing back there,” Coleman said. “She’s one of the leaders on the team so it was a good fit.”

The Lady Bobcats will look to make it 2-0 against 10-3A foes with a 5:30 p.m. Friday contest against Lone Star. Coleman said the team has goals of a lengthy postseason run and this week marks the beginning of that journey.

“We’re ready for anything district throws at us,” he said. “We want to be district champs and go deep into the playoffs. Expectations are still high.”

Aiding in that cause could ultimately be Celina’s non-district schedule that featured the likes of Southlake Carroll, Flower Mound Marcus, Frisco Centennial and Waco Midway.

“We’ve played some really tough teams,” Coleman said. “We’ve had some good games and some one-run losses that we should have won.”
