525,600 New York minutes, and change
I can't pretend to know how to write a theater review. My former colleague Penny Rathbun could write circles around me in that department. Me? I'm going to have to fall back on the safe, "I don't know art, but I know what I like."

I like "Fly By Night."

The indie rock musical tells the story of three young people -- Daphne, Harold and Miriam -- involved in a love triangle during the year prior to and including the November 1965 blackout that hit New York. It's funny where it needs to be, deep without getting gloomy. It's smart and clean and exhilarating.

'Side Effects' tells haunting tale
Director Steven Soderbergh has been a Hollywood mainstay for more than 20 years, although "Side Effects" is his self-proclaimed final feature film.

That's a shame, because Soderbergh is at top form in the film, providing a unique tale of a woman coming to terms with her husband's return from jail for insider trading.

Emily Taylor (played by Rooney Mara) struggles regaining her life when Martin (Channing Tatum) comes back into it. After a self-inflicted incident puts Emily in the hospital, psychiatrist Jonathan Banks (Jude Law) tells her to visit his office for therapy.

'Zero Dark Thirty' provides tense experience
The general premise behind "Zero Dark Thirty" is mostly known. After years of searching for Osama bin Laden, U.S. agents unexpectedly located and assassinated the al-Quida leader in 2011 following confusion regarding his whereabouts.

Despite having been played out in newspapers and across television sets, however, director Kathyn Bigelow and writer Mark Boal (the team behind "The Hurt Locker," which won both Academy Awards in their respective categories two years ago) have crafted a film that's engrossing throughout and takes viewers to parts of the hunt for bin Laden not revealed in media reports.

Maya (played by Jessica Chastain) fights the accepted belief among her fellow CIA agents that bin Laden is hiding in mountain caves, instead insisting the terrorist leader is hiding in plain sight somewhere in Pakistan.

Tarantino's palette in full force for 'Django Unchained'
Within the first 15 minutes of "Django Unchained," it's made apparent that this is a film only Quentin Tarantino could have fostered.

And that's not necessarily a bad thing.

A spaghetti western at heart, "Django Unchained" takes place just two years prior to the Civil War and is initially set somewhere in Texas -- seriously. The story centers around Django (Jamie Foxx), a slave purchased by German-born dentist-turned-bounty hunter Dr. King Schultz (Christoph Waltz) to aid him in his pursuit of the infamous Brittle brothers -- Django's former slave owners.

‘Jack Reacher’ delivers action, humor:Level of violence high for PG-13 rating
In “Jack Reacher,” Tom Cruise aptly brings to life the title character, a former military policeman turned criminal investigator.

The movie, written and directed by Christopher McQuarrie of “Usual Suspects” fame, is an adaptation of British author Lee Child’s book “One Shot,” published in 2005 as the ninth book in the Reacher series.

The film opens with a sniper firing six shots in downtown Pittsburgh, killing five innocent bystanders. When all the physical evidence leads to James Barr (Joseph Sikora) the case appears to be closed. While he gives no explanation, Barr asks the police to find Jack Reacher.
